The European Drone Licence is the mandatory proof if you want to fly drones heavier than 250 grams. Depending on the weight of the drone, you fall into subcategory A1, A2 or A3.
To fly in subcategories A1/A3, you need to take the DronePilot Basic Light. To fly in A2, you need to take additional training and examination for A2 in addition to training for A1/A3. The DronePilot Basic is for both subcategories A1/A3 and subcategory A2.
If you want to start flying drones, this course is the starting point. Everyone, including professional drone pilots, must start with the EU Flight Licence Basic A1/A3. This course will therefore teach you the basics of flying drones and the associated legal obligations and restrictions.
This online course with exam is required by law for anyone wishing to fly a drone of 250g or more take-off weight.
The risk associated with flights within subcategory A2 is estimated by EASA to be higher than the risk associated with flights within subcategories A1 and A3. Therefore, if you want to fly within subcategory A2, you need to take an extra exam and sign a declaration that you have done self-training.
If you want to obtain the EU Advanced A2 licence, you should first have successfully completed the EU Basic A1/A3 licence.
